Read all about it!

See these pincushions? They have been on a journey. So have I, but they actually got to do the traveling. It started back in March when I was searching for a name for my new etsy shop for items made with selvages. I posted several times about the trouble I was having with finding a name, like this  one. I got a lot of good input, and finally settled on Sewing on the Edge, with the awesome tag line of "selvaging my sanity one stitch at a time." One of the people who commented later contacted me and wondered if I would be interested in having my pincushions in a magazine. Uh, seriously? Seriously??

Turns out she is assistant editor with the Quilting Arts group of magazines. So my pincushions got shipped off to New York and I got to write instructions on how to make them.

I think they had more fun than I did. Well, you just saw the picture I took of them.

Look what happened when they were in the hands of professionals:
They made it to the cover. They are COVER GIRLS!!

A little closer:

The Table of Contents:

Wanna see the whole page? Sure you do...
See those two pictures above the pincushions? I'm sharing the page with Elizabeth Hartman of Oh Fransson! and Ashley Newcomb of Film in the Fridge! Kinda like being in the company of rock stars. Eeek!!!

So turning to page 72....a two-page spread! Sorry if I keep showing you the same picture over and over. I know for some of you, being published is kind of same old, same old, but not for me, that's for sure.

Okay. Last time. Promise.

Didn't they photograph well? They will all be going into the etsy shop this weekend.

Working with Pippa Eccles from Quilting Arts was an amazing experience. Thanks so much, Pippa!

Anyone want some free fabric? Six fat quarters from Valori Wells' line, Sole.

Anyone want a free copy of International Quilt Festival? The cover looks like this (just in case you forgot...)
They officially hit the newsstands on the 26th and I get a couple of complimentary copies. They haven't been shipped quite yet, but when they arrive on my doorstop, I'll send one of them over to the winner's doorstep.

So leave a comment and let me know if you have ever been to the International Quilt Festival in Houston or if you save selvages. I'll pick two winners on Monday, October 25, at noon PST.

CONGRATULATIONS! It's very well-deserved, and you have every right to be proud.

I haven't been to the International Quilt Festival, and I just started saving selvages to send to someone I know who makes lovely pincushions out of them. ;)

Wow! That is so cool that you've been published! I know what you mean about feeling like your in the land of the giants, the quilting giants that is. After reading your blog I have been inspired to save all my selvedges, I would love to make (or even buy from you) a personalised pin cushion, do you know of any fabric ranges/designers called Laura? I've also had my eye on your European Adventure design, its amazing!

Unfortunately no, i've never been to houston. I would love to make the trip one day but its about 4000 miles!

So happy for you and your published cuties :-)

Congratulations on being published! That is so great!

This is my first year since starting quilting that I've been out of college and therefore free on the weekends, so my mom and I are planning on going to Houston this year. I'm so excited!

Okay this so FREAKING AWESOME!!!! Wahooo!!!!
Congratulations!! You so deserve this, and all of your hard work and creative genious is paying off...
I've never been to Quilt Market, but one day, maybe I'll have the opportunity.
I save my selvedges, a little growing basket for you.

If I ever get published, I would spread it all over my blog in capital letters and show closeups and repeats, so shout it out, blog friend...getting published is a big deal!

Oh my gosh Cindy!!! That is SO AWESOME!!!! Congratulations! I would be just as ecstatic if I was ever published! What a totally cool accomplishment! And you got a great spread too! Not just a little quarter of a page thing (although, even that would be cool!)

I've never been to any quilt festival. Would love to, but it just hasn't happened yet!

Yes, I save selvages. I save them for this really nice lady named Cindy! I never saved them before but since I found her, I save them so maybe she will get some use out of them! ;)

Jennifer said... #

Congrats!!!! This could not have happened to a nicer person; you so deserve this! I wish you could have gone to New York with them but they did represent you quite well...

Jennifer :)

PS I'm glad you finally posted the good news!

WAY TO GO! Congratulations! I'm proud of you and proud to say I know you personally, too. :)

I've never been to 'any' quilt festival. But maybe if I were a quilter... ;)

I have saved selvages, but only from a certain "agent orange's" fabric (she loved her new name). Then again, that's just about all the fabric I've sewed with in the last few years, too. ;)

My mom was featured at the quilt festival in Houston many many years ago. Her quilt was STOLEN and it was a big scandal! She got a bit of insurance money, but as you know, those quilts are priceless.

Wow! Congratulations indeed!! I'd be stopping strangers in the street and making them look! They look super too. I love what you do with your selvages .. I try to keep them but only have a few as I seem to end up clearing up a little too quickly sometimes!

I live in UK so can only dream of Houston and the Quilt Festival ... Now, if only I were a little selvage pincushion, I could travel the world ... :)

Terriaw said... #

Congratulations Cindy! This is so exciting! Your pincushions look amazing in the glossy full-color photos. I bought my very own copy today, and I wanted to run around the bookstore to tell everyone I knew the maker of those adorable pincushions. (I resisted.) I love the backstory about how these projects and this article came to be. So proud of you!

Oh, yes, you've inspired me to save my selvages. I used selvages to make potholders for Stitch in Dye's potholder swap last year, and since have been asked for more from friends.
I love my local guilds' quilt show, and can imagine the Int'l in Houston would be fantastic!
Please enter me in your lovely and generous give-away!

Congratulations on your publication. The first time I had a short story published I think I floated off the ground for about a week. Even my children fighting in the back of the car didn't puncture that balloon.

So fun to see it--throw my name in the hat for the magazine. I went to Houston once and slept for about a week when I came home. Have you been?

And p.s. I save selvages and send them to you.

Congratulations again!

How fantastic! Cover girls! I would love to see that magazine and read all about those pincushions.
I have never been to a quilt market, and would be lost and overwhelmed I'm sure...even fabric stores do that to me...I have to have a purpose in going looking for something specific or else I just walk out overwhelmed with all the eye candy....:0
I do save selvedges and have made a valence for the sewing room (need another for the other window, but I am out of aqua and green selvages for now) and I've made tea wallets with them. I want to do a spider web or fractured stars next I think...I love the looks of selvages!

Kaye Prince said... #

Eeek, congrats Cindy! I haven't been to International Quilt Festival yet, but I have been to Quilt Market...which I know is not the same but the festival and Fall market usually run back to back. And yes, I also save salvages!

Diane said... #

Wow, the quilt on the cover of the magazine is so beautiful! I have never seen that mag in my local quilt shop. I do save selvages, although I have yet to make something with them. I often use the colored selvage edge as a ribbon, though.

Marcia W. said... #

Congratulations on being published. I saw the cover quilt and loved it from another blog - then I find it was yours! I have not been to Intl. Quilt Festival or any Market. I was introduced to selvages when started reading DUQ online. Now that I am sewing more, am saving them. However, these are not very interesting. Maybe one day will use it for my first pincushion. Please enter me into your lovely drawing. My birthday is next week so would be awesome to win. mlwright29 (at) hotmail (dot) com

I have never been the Quilt Festival... having never been to Houston. Although I have an old friend there so maybe some day. I do collect selvages...with the hope of creating "something" down the road when I have enough. But I think I could cheat a little and make a pin cushion just to play a little for now.

Congratulations on being published, and the pincushions seem like the perfect thing. I just started collecting selvages because I also would love to make some pincushions- I have decided I want to collect pincushions but I'm still a newby on those. No I have never been to the Houston Quilt Festival show, as a matter of fact the closest I have been to TX is when I drove thru on Interstate 40. Actually I have only been to a couple of Quilt shows,I loved them and wanted to make every quilt I saw, talk about being overwhelmed!!
I also love magazines, my husband doesn't say much but he's beginning to wonder how high I can pile them before they tip over. So maybe I will have a magazine rack in my future.
Take care and BIG hugs
