From Start to Finish: My Swedish Ex

It's about time I show a finished quilt. I always enjoy sharing where the inspiration came from, and move on to the completed quilt.

This is My Swedish Ex (more about the name later....)

The idea started when Mark and I were at IKEA and I saw this little 8"x8" print on a canvas.
I loved the graphic impact, and of course the fact that it was solid colors.

It was about the time that Hoffman Fabrics came out with their new Me+You line of solid and subtle print batiks. As soon as they were available, I purchased a fat quarter stack of the prints, and then Hoffman sent some of the solids for me to work with.

The blocks (there are actually three blocks) are easy to construct.

A few times I was able to achieve a transparency effect and those are my favorite blocks.

In May, Mark and I headed to the Monterey coast and took some fun shots. Going to the coast for quilt photography might be one of the main reasons I keep quilting--haha.

The backing came from my stash. Both fabrics have color names.

Oh, and the name...Since my inspiration came from IKEA, I started with "Swedish." At first I was just going to call it "Swedish X" and leave it at that. But somehow, changing it to "ex" seemed to add more mystery to the story.  And if nothing else, it made me chuckle. Mark always says I come up with quilt names mostly to amuse myself. He might be right about that.

This is such a fun, colorful quilt, and those transparency points are the icing on the cake. Good to know Mark needn't worry too much about a "Swedish Ex". ;^) And if we can't amuse ourselves...

It's a very cool quilt, great work with those fabrics. I love your photo settings - I have a mermaid-fabrics quilt that has been waiting about two months for me to get to the seashore for photos (it's only half an hour or so away from here but is off my usual 'beaten-track' so I haven't been yet). Today I am flying off to Wellington which sits right on the coast, so will take the quilt and camera with me, and then I can post the quilt to its recipient right after I've snapped my shots! Good things take time!

Thanks for sharing! I love your work and this quilt in particular! I like the colors and the block placement. This would make an awesome pattern. Have you thought of writing it down? Id probably buy it!

This was worth the wait! The colors and design are gorgeous. I can't believe it's only three blocks! Love the name and where you got the inspiration! Perfect!

It's a really fun and bright quilt, Cindy! I love how well the Ikea design translated into your design. It's especially neat that you made transparency Xes, as transparency is something that has attracted my attention lately. I'd like to explore it further. How nice for you to have a finish. Those are few and far between around here!

I LOVE this quilt Cindy!!! It's a great design and perfect for solids. I like how you mixed in the prints for a transparency effect too. Very very cool. And the name is so good. It does add a bit of mystery going from x to ex. Good choice.
