Tale of Two Cities

I've been away from the computer for awhile, and it has felt really good. And I've been spending more time in my sewing room. Which has also felt really good!

I have been working on my "temperature quilt" (idea from Rachel), keeping track of high and low temperatures for each day, in Fresno and in St. Paul. Thus, "Tale of Two Cities." The top 2 1/2 rows are Fresno, the lower 2 1/2 rows are St. Paul. Since I'm doing highs and lows from each day (Rachel is only doing one temperature rather than two), I decided that I needed to separate the months and decided on 1/2" strip of black (the black over on the far right completes the June strip since there are only 30 days, but I'm thinking of changing to charcoal grey as the black seems kind of jarring to me). Oh, and the little tiny strip of black (July 9) is because we broke a record high from 1902. Man, I hating breaking records like that...

When I originally chose my fabrics--Grunge by Basic Grey for Moda, I ordered a fat quarter stack of the pretty new colors. Since I'm actually making two quilts, I have quickly found out that a fat quarter stack is not going to be nearly enough, especially for some of the common temperatures, which lately have been the equivalent of highs in St. Paul and lows in Fresno.

So I'm ordering another fat quarter stack from Fat Quarter Shop ASAP, not only before I run out, but because of this great sale--good through July 18th.

What are you working on? I hope you are keeping cool. Or warm. Depending on the temperature tale happening in your city!

I'm glad you're getting time to sew. We aren't keeping cool. It's 40' which is about 104. Oh well. I don't mind the heat : )

While my hometown is freezing, I am experiencing a 36C day in the Dordogne! Your quilt will make an interesting record of 2014... The colours are wonderful!

Amazing! It's going to look great and I like the boldness of the black, it looks very meteorological to me! Talking of switching of the computer - I saw this great video that made me turn mine off straight way, in fact off I go now! x

The colours of this quilt really caught my eye and I liked the predominant reds/orange/yellow with the splashed of cooler colours - then I read what it was meant to represent. Fascinating. What would be really interesting is to get a bunch of quilters across the world to do the same thing and compare all the results. I can tell you, the British one would be speckled all over. It can be hot one day, cold the next, warmer on some days in February than July!

What a fun idea! I live in the high desert at 7000ft and so in the summer it is nothing for it to be 95 during the day and in the 50's at night. This might make an interesting , somewhat two toned quilt. Is there another blog post I have missed that describes what temperature range denotes a different color?

What a fun idea!!! It would be a fun row quilt to do with friends in different cities around the world - you would only have to make rows of your temperatures, they would make their temperature rows and mail them off at the end of the month!! It would also be a fun quilt to make for a whole year just in your location! Depending on where you lived, you would really have to have a huge range of colors to denote the temperature range - over 100 in some places, but what a cool/hot idea!!!

Glad you're sewing and getting a break. I can't wait to see how these quilts look when all the temps are recorded. It's such an interesting idea. I've taken a big break from the computer, blogs etc too. Just wish I could say I'm getting lots of sewing done too. But it's summer so I'm trying to not be too hard on myself.

It looks so great! I've had to order more fabric as well. It was hard to know what temp ranges we would be in the most. Fortunately its been a couple months since we've had any records broken in either direction up here. Its actually been a pretty cool summer, so far.
