Quilts by the Water: Faded Denim Jacket/Pebble Beach, California

Faded Denim Jacket was inspired by the acoustical ceiling tiles in our church sanctuary. Sometimes my mind would wander during the service and I would find myself staring up at the ceiling and thinking "that would make a great quilt."

There seemed to be three values--light, medium and dark. I had a fat quarter bundle of denim/chambray fabrics I had been wanting to use, so they were designated as the dark value. Then I had a charm pack of Liberty of London style fabrics--very soft lawn. They were mostly florals and I just loved the feel of them. They became the medium value. I used Kona Snow for the light value. The quilt went together quickly--all the squares are 5".

For the backing, I had a very lightweight chambray, and for the binding I chose a stripe. As far as the "feel" of a quilt, it is the favorite of all the quilts I have made over the years and we use it yearround.

One of my favorite items of clothing is a denim shirt or denim jacket, hence, the name of the quilt. I wear striped t-shirts a lot, but if I had a small-scale floral shirt, it would be a perfect combination.

It was a fun one to photograph.

These were taken in Pacific Grove.

Then we moved on to 17-Mile Drive in Pebble Beach.

I often think about making a second version so don't be surprised if that shows up one of these days.

I love hearing about where your quilt ideas come from. You find inspiration everywhere. Also fun to see close ups of the quilt details and all the pretty fabrics in this one. Bet it feels great.

I long to come to those places again: both Pacific Grove and the coastal area. YOu are always so good to take breaks and take a night or two in a hotel to refresh, and I am ALWAYS glad to see one of your fun quilts in a location by the sea. Beautifully done--it looks so soft and cuddly!
