Quilts by the Water: Best Sellers, Pacific Grove, California

When Kate Basti came out with her Tall Tales block, I had the idea of  combining some of my favorite fabrics with their corresponding selvages. The selvage became the spine of the book, and in a couple of  instances part of the cover.

It was such a fun quilt to make.

I had a fat quarter bundle of bright texty print by Allison Glass that worked perfectly for the sashing. The print was small and subtle, but just right for a quilt containing book blocks.

For the backing I had this fun print that looks like library cards.

Mark and I took the quilt to one of our favorite places on the coast, Pacific Grove, at a time in the year when the ice plants were in full bloom.

It was a windy day, but Mark never complains about holding a quilt.

I do love your book quilt. I have made some of those as well, but I never thought to put sashing in between the blocks. I love all the outdoor pictures of your quilts and the ice plants look beautiful too.

What a perfect name for the quilt, and the sashing prints set the books off and are such a lovely up close detail. The ice plants in Pacific Grove frame the quilt beautifully!

Love how you used the selvages for the book spines. Brilliant idea. Great beach photos too. The flowers are so pretty. Just curious if you also taken pics of this one in a library?

I made a quilt with the Tall Books pattern that featured novelty and picture prints as covers. Fun to guess what the books might be about! :) I have at least one more book quilt in me (the former one is going as a quilt bingo prize for the Baltimore Modern quilt guild this coming April).

Love the selvedge usage! Hope I retain that idea. Grin.

I made a doll quilt using 6 of the Tall Books blocks. It came out great and was so much fun. The novelty options one can use for the books...it's incredible! Your much larger quilt is even more fun and more wonderful. I adore the selvedge titles, the photo setting and everything about your project. Thanks so much for sharing a great pattern.

Looks like this Tall Tales book-making project was perfect for you and your stash! Wow. I couldn't have made such a quilt. You have the ideal fabrics for all of it, including your selvedges. Love the library card backing fabric. And your photos are beautiful! I've never seen ice plants, nor such pretty blooms. Mark gets extremely high points in the "amenable husband" department!

Love this! I miss the ocean and I miss Pacific Beach, so I spent extra time looking at all your photos: not only the ones of the beautiful quilt, but also the beautiful landscape where you photographed it. I loved how in one photo the pink of the flowers are sort of reflected in the quilt! What a fun quilt, with all the right quilty fabrics!
