WIP Wednesday: Supernova Starburst

I looked up the definition of supernova. There were several, but I liked the wording of this definition the best:
"the explosion of a star in which the star may reach a maximum intrinsic luminosity one billion times that of the sun."

I present to you Supernova Starburst:
I can't even begin to tell you how much I love this quilt. The explosion of colors, the hot saturation in each block, the subtle luminosity.

Most of my batik fabrics had been given to friends as it seems the "modern" quilt movement doesn't generally embrace batiks. But when I looked at the colors of Lee's blog button and my stash of batiks, I knew they were made for each other.
I paired all those gorgeous fabrics with some cooling Kona solid grey to really make the colors pop.
I think all these triangles that were trimmed off will somewhat appear on the back of the quilt. They are much too pretty to toss.

I also have this stack of scraps. It isn't enough to make a Supernova quilt, but I'll send them to the first person who wants to give them a good home.

So that's what I've been working on in the last week. Now go see what everyone else has been doing.

Such a beautiful quilt! I love batik fabric and used them for a sampler quilt I did last summer! I'd be happy to give your scraps a good home!

Your Supernova Starburst is just gorgeous!! I love it in the full view as well as the close-up details of the batiks you used. Awesome!! What an interesting definition for supernova-- I did not know that-- thank you for sharing. Have a great day and enjoy your new finish!

I can see why you called it starburst. The colours just burst off the background of the quilt.

Love the quilt! Great choice with the grey background, you're right, the colors pop! And what an adorable pile of scraps (: They'd be fun to play with.
I just found your blog, and I love it, I'm your newest follower!

The batiks work perfectly with that pattern. I absolutely love it. It's like a gorgeous sunset

I love how your quilt matches the quilt along's button! I would have never thought of using batiks with solids, but the result is stunning!

What a wonderful modern use of batiks. I really don't understand the aversion to those fabrics. (I find that snobbery kinda funny coming from a group of quilters who seem to champion the attitude of not caring about "rules" and embracing individuality.) They're gorgeous fabrics, and this is a remarkable Supernova. :D

What a gorgeous quilt! I love how the colours play in the light, pulling some of the blocks forward while pushing others to the back. You have definitely made me want to try this quilt now!

This is a Super quilt bursting with luminocity and you are certainly living a colorful life! Love it...even though I am not usually a big fan of batiks, I really like this rendition!

I think I needle to bottle some of your energy and drink it on my slow days. Your supernova quilt is quite impressive and I am really glad you used the batiks. I've dragged out a few here and there out of my stash recently, and found that they really worked well. They have movement in their "solidness" and I like that in a quilt.

Bravo!

And I *adore* batiks, too. An excellent job!

PS- I always welcome scraps. Figured I would throw that out even though it looks like yours already have a new home, LOL!

This is gorgeous! I love the batiks too. Makes me want to make something with batiks. From far away, they read as solids, and that's kinda modern. I think it looks great though. Impressive!

What a beautiful quilt! I think batiks are timeless. It's a shame the 'modern movement" doesn't embrace them!

Poppyprint said... #

modern, schmodern. I'm so glad you used your beautiful batiks. They are absolutely perfect for this quilt!!! It's positively luminescent!

Melinda said... #

I don't think it matters what fabrics you use; it's how you use them. And you have used them well, my dear! I think we just quilt, we create. I think it matters more how you utilize your color sense alongside a pattern to maximize it's beauty. It doesn't matter what the fabric looks like if it brings out the beauty of your quilt!

Jen B said... #

I love how the batiks give the supernova blocks depth and movement. I'm another one who doesn't understand why batiks are so scorned by modern quilters. I really like both modern, graphic fabric and batiks. I feel that they can be used very effectively in modern quilt patterns, as you've shown!

Jenniffier said... #

Oh my gosh! That is such a great quilt. Love the colors, love the bursting, love it all!

Leanne said... #

That is a beautiful supernova!

I loved seeing this quilt top in person! Simply stunning with the bright batiks matched with the solid kona gray. It really does look like a starburst and a great rendition of the supernova button.

it's a fantastic quilt, Cindy. I consider myself very priviledged to have seen it live and in person this weekend. I can't stop smiling when i think about all the fun we had. :)

hope you are home safe and sound!
