Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 8: The Blog Tour

Welcome to my stop on the Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks (Volume 8) Blog Tour.   Each of these issues is such a wonderful resource of blocks, ranging from traditional to modern, pieced to applique. I'm so happy to be able to share my block, Ring Around the Posy, which is a little bit of both.
Although I have been quilting for nearly twenty years, I have never done much applique work, but this year I ventured into doing a little bit of machine applique, using a buttonhole stitch. It is easy and really fun.

Wouldn't this block make a great baby quilt?

Look what you can do with just five blocks. I can even imagine this block in holiday colors for a fun Christmas table runner. Changing the block orientation to being on point completely changes the look of it, doesn't it?

Or maybe you just need a new wall hanging.

I'm thrilled to offer a chance to win a copy of the latest issue so leave a comment here. I'd love to know if you have tried machine applique before, and if you have any special hints to share. I'll choose a winner on Saturday, November 16, at noon PST, so be sure I have a way to contact you. The latest issue should be hitting the newsstands some time next week.

For all the  blog tour stops and more giveaways, hop on over to Quiltmaker's Quilty Pleasures blog. Thanks for stopping by!

I have experimented, but was very unhappy with the results. I am going to try again now that I have read some of the other commenters hints - hopefully with better results. Congrats to you for a great block and thanks to all who shared their expertise/hints. kathleendotlutzatcomcastdotnet

great combination block! love your melons pinwheels! have worked most of my applique projects with blanket or zigzag stitches by machine, but love raw edge stitching for easier, faster stitching. I can match my thread color to the piece i'm stitching or use a darker or lighter thread, even black for more definition.

While hand applique is my favorite technique, there are many projects and not enough time so machine applique is a great alternative. I use monofilament thread at times and love using a small blanket stitch with 60 wt thread. pjrquilter at msn dot com

I just finally managed to machine applique my first little project since I got a new machine that stops in the needle down position. But, I haven't tried using the buttonhole stitch. I used a zig zag stitch and just made them really close together. I might need to try buttonhole next time.

I have done a little machine applique and want to try some more. No tips, I'm afraid, I'm too new at it.

I love the look of the block on point. And at first glance I noticed the pansies and not the pinwheel block. My first blanket was an applique block. I made it for my grandmother. It was alternating blocks of snow flakes fabric and then on the others I appliqued huge snow flakes. It was a ton of fun, a lot of work because instead of just turning over the edges, I made two copies and sewed them together then turned them inside out. Wow was I naive back then. Hehe.

I love your block. It is so bright and the pinwheel center is really great. I look forward to a chance to play with it. I have not done every much machine appliqué, I need to work up my confidence when it comes to working with the machine and I think I will spend some time next week checking out the comments to see if there are any helpful tips.

I've done just a little machine applique. Would like to try some more--don't seem to get around to it since I really enjoy hand applique!

At my local guild, I won several quilt blocks that were NOT machine appliqued just fused. My suggestion is to try to find a good start and stop points on each fused piece and wear gloves.

What a great block!! I haven't tried machine applique yet. I'm still a newbie to quilting... :)

I used machine applique when I made a quilt using the uniform of a former discharged marine. I made the borders with the words "OOH-RAH", "Semper Fi" and "Once a Marine" "Always a Marine". I admit they really made the quilt, but were not so much fun to applique using the cammi fabric. But your block rocks. I love the fact that you used Baby Brights not pastels. Great job.

Love your block and the bright colors. I haven't tried any applique myself yet but I hope to soon. I see way too many great ideas all over blogland.

I have tried some raw edge applique and also appliqued some fun zoo animals on a quilt with a blanket stitch. It turned out cute but pretty limited compared to patchwork. Your block looks great! Congrats!

Love Ring Around the Posy! I have done a little machine applique. Right now I make mostly charity quilts for Mayo/St. Mary's Hospital Pediatric Infusion Therapy Unit (kids chemo) but when I retire in 1 year (!!!!) I would like to do more challenging applique.

Can't say I've tried machine applique, but it's on my list.

I love machine applique; I try to do the applique before I sew the blocks together.

This is a great block Cindy!--I was wondering what it looked like after you mentioned it had been accepted! =)

I've done both machine and hand applique and much prefer the look of hand applique, but the speed of machine.

Great variations on the block, congrats on the feature :o)

I do machine/fusible applique

What an intriguing block!
I recently appliqued a dresden onto a backing fabric for a bee, and i used the invisible hem stitch on my machine. I liked the result and the speed, but I prefer the look of hand stitched applique.
